Through the Fog

Through the Fog explores the tension between conservation and industry at Point Reyes National Seashore, where tule elk were fenced in for decades to accommodate cattle ranching. Cut off from vital water sources, hundreds of elk perished—an avoidable tragedy within a national park meant to protect them.

The fence became a symbol of misplaced priorities as the National Park Service renewed private ranching leases while wildlife suffered. But now, the fog is lifting. In 2024, a landmark legal settlement mandated the removal of the fence and the gradual phase-out of dairy and cattle operations, freeing nearly 17,000 acres and allowing the elk to roam beyond imposed boundaries.

"Through the Fog" captures this moment of transition—from confinement to open land, from loss to renewal—as the elk reclaim their place in their ancestral home.
